The Restitution of Land
A significant milestone occurred in February 2008 when the Department of Land Affairs returned 2,026.66 hectares of land to the descendants of the original landowners. This precious land is situated within the breathtaking Pilanesberg National Park. This act of restitution represents not just acreage, but a deep historical and cultural connection to our ancestral heritage.
This land is our heritage, and its return through the Restitution of Land Rights Act 22 of 1994 is a testament to justice and community resilience. The WCPA now holds and manages this land collectively, ensuring its sustainable use and benefit for all member families."
Co-management Agreement
To ensure the effective participation and benefit of our members from the returned land, a comprehensive agreement was forged. This agreement was entered into between the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, the National Land Claims Commission, and the CPAs, in terms of the Protected Areas Act 57 of 2003 and the Co-management Agreement Policy.
This groundbreaking agreement established a robust management vehicle that acknowledges and fully integrates the new landowners into the stewardship of the Pilanesberg National Park. It signifies a commitment to collaborative conservation, responsible tourism, and sustainable land management, ensuring the long-term ecological and economic viability of the area for both the park and our community.
Pilanesberg National Park
Our Shared Home: "The Pilanesberg Game Reserve, a vast national park spanning 57,200 hectares, is a true South African gem. Renowned as a premier wildlife destination, it is home to the majestic Big Five – Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, and Buffalo.
Its strategic location, just a three-hour drive from OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng Province, makes it one of the most accessible and popular national parks in South Africa. The reserve also boasts several luxurious 5-star accommodations and a wide array of tourist activities, cementing its status as a nodal area for tourism and conservation within the North West Province.
For the Welgeval CPA, being an integral part of this iconic park means not only a deep connection to our heritage but also a shared responsibility in preserving its natural splendour for future generations, while exploring economic opportunities for the benefit of our communities.
